Toyota Corolla was Australia’s best-selling car in November and Mazda3 outsold Holden Commodore as new car sales for the month were slightly up on November last year.

Corolla racked-up 17,400 sales last month – 7,600 more than its nearest rival and the fourth time this year it has been number one - and Toyota continues to lead overall sales with 166,046 for the year. Holden is second overall, more than 50,000 vehicles down on Toyota with 2011 sales of 115,902.

Ford is third with 2011 sales of 84,519

But they won’t be happy at Holden HQ with the news that Mazda3, with 3,480 sales in November, topped Holden Commodore with 2,808 sales.

Overall new car sales so far this year total 925,978 vehicles which is 2.4 per cent down on the same period last year. However December sales should be strong with brands previously held back by stock shortages resulting from the Thailand floods now enjoying full supply.

Mazda has edged ahead of Hyundai in the race to be leading importer but it’s still very close – Mazda totaling 80,985 sales as at the end of November to Hyundai’s 80,150.

In the luxury brands, Mercedes-Benz leads the way with 19,127 sales this year, ahead of BMW with 15,595.

Overall, passenger car sales remain down by 5.5 per cent compared to 2010, but SUVs are strong (16.2 per cent up) and commercial vehicles are also going well with light trucks ahead by 3.4 per cent and heavy trucks up by 5.4 per cent.
