Nissan is well-advanced with its autonomous ‘Piloted Drive’ program and is on-track to launch ‘Piloted Drive 1.0’ vehicles (heavy highway traffic conditions) by the end of next year.
By 2018 the plan calls for vehicles capable of multiple lane piloted drive which can change lanes on highways and by 2020 we should see Nissans which can operate in piloted drive mode in city/suburban locations including intersections.
Nissan has already begun tested its LEAF electric ‘Piloted Drive’ prototype on highways and city/urban roads.
To assist its autonomous operation, the Nissan LEAF is fitted with millimeter wave radar, laser scanners, an eight-way 360-degree camera, high-speed computer chips and a specialized HMI (Human Machine Interface) HMI system.
To assist the driver, a head-up display shows the chosen driving path including lane changes and intersections.
