After an extensive preparation, the all-electric Nissan LEAF – the best electric car on the market in our opinion – is now on-sale.

The family-size five-door hatchback Nissan LEAF – the reigning World and European Car Of The Year - is available from 13 Nissan LEAF dealers, priced at $51,500.

Power comes from an 80kW/280Nm electric motor which provides instant toque equivalent to a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine. Nissan has cleverly spaced the 48 compact battery modules under the floor in order to optimize weight distribution and interior space.

Designed as an all-electric car from day one, the Nissan LEAF succeeds because it’s just like a conventional car. As well as its good looks and five-star Euro NCAP safety, the Nissan LEAF is an engaging car to drive.

The five-door hatchback Nissan LEAF rides on independent strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear. With a range between battery re-charges of 170kms, the vast majority of Australian motorists could easily switch to a Nissan LEAF as their daily drive with no inconvenience.

In order to protect inattentive pedestrians, at speeds below 40km/h, the Nissan LEASF emits an artificial sound from front-end speakers (electric cars make no noise).

For Car Showroom, it’s the size and practicality of the Nissan LEAF which make it the world’s best all-electric car at this point. Measuring 4445mm in length and with a wheelbase of 2700mm, the Nissan LEAF’s clever design means it provides genuine family-friendly space inside and while it’s certainly aerodynamic and maximizes the advantages of its electric drivetrain, the LEAF doesn’t look like a ‘Science Experiment’.

Inside of course things are different with lots of ‘Eco’ indicators and flat panel displays for information such as battery temperature etc and the ‘CARWINGS’ telematics system (free for the first 36 months of ownership but an annual sub £ó£?£ò£é£e£?ion is required after that).
