On an airport runway in the UAE, the world record for world fastest drift in the world has just been set by a specially prepared Nissan GT-R.
A Nissan GT-R, albeit one that's been specially, has just set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest drift in the world – a very GT-R-ish record if there ever was one.
We knew that Nissan had something cooking when it released a video teaser of an especially angry-looking Nismo GT-R smoking its tyres on a runway. The teaser ended with the promise of world record soon to be broken, but exactly what and how remained unknown.
Now we do know, and the new record the world’s fastest drift – as verified by Guinness World Records at Fujairah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates - set by that car stands at 304.96km/h at an angle of 30-degrees. That is stupendously fast. At the wheel of the record breaking run was Japanese drift champion Masato Kawabata.
The GT-R was prepared by GReddy Trust with support and coordination from the motorsport and performance arm of Nissan, the Nismo division. The car was tuned to produce 1380hp (1030kW) from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V6 and tested extensively with (Kawabata at the wheel) at the Fuji Speedway in Japan.
“Once again, Nissan has broken a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title and has made international history for the fifth time in the Middle East,” said Samir Cherfan, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East.
“The Nissan GT-R is one of the world’s most iconic supercars, proving time and again the incredible breadth of its capabilities, and has clearly demonstrated its performance leadership by beating the best drift cars out there. The fact that this achievement was set here in the UAE makes it even more special for our region. Setting this incredibly difficult world record was a clear demonstration of the excitement we are bringing to the Middle East with the Nismo brand.”
