Coincidentally, the Melbourne Motor Show saw the debut of two beautifully styled and comprehensively equipped mid-size wagons – the Ford Mondeo and Renault Laguna.

Both are red-hot sellers in Europe, so Australian wagon buyers really should check them out.

Ford’s Mondeo wagon was previewed at the Melbourne Motor Show last year but local versions have now arrived ahead of market launch in about three months.

This really is a beautifully styled and comprehensively equipped European wagon. Equipment levels mirror the Mondeo Zetec hatch and sedan models and the wagon’s execution is first-class.

With up to 1733 litres of luggage space, the Mondeo wagon could easily handle the tasks of the vast majority of wagon buyers – even though it’s technically a mid-sizer.

Under the bonnet is Ford’s 2.3-litre Duratec four-cylinder engine which provides 118kW of power and 208 Nm of torque. Drive is through a six-speed auto with Sequential Sports Shift.

The safety package is extensive and includes Stability Control as well as seven airbags.
