Mercedes-Benz has raised the technology bar again with its full-size S 500 Plug-In Hybrid full-size luxury sedan capable of covering 100kms using less than 3.0-litres of fuel.
Power comes from a new 245kW turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 with a 80kW340Nm electric drive and the S 500 Plug-In Hybrid can cover almost 30kms on zero-emission pure-electric driving. And unlike the existing autonomous hybrids – S 400 and S 300 BlueTEC – the S 500 is a plug-in hybrid with 10 times the energy content and external re-charging capability via a power socket near the rear bumper.
There are four driving modes – ‘Hybrid’, ‘E-MODE’ (electric only), ‘E-SAVE’ (fully charged battery is reserved so you can switch to pure electric later) and ‘CHARGE’ (battery is charged while driving). So, for example when driving from the airport to the city you would start in ‘E-SAVE’ and when entering the CBD switch to ‘E-MODE’ pure electric thus cutting-down on exhaust gases in congested environments – very clever and the best combination for the future.
The Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-In Hybrid also features a GPS-based intelligent hybrid system which adjust battery charging and discharging to the likely route (for the next 8.0kms). This anticipation of energy management improves energy efficiency.
