Mercedes-Benz has released details for its all-new B-Class hatchback which will make its global premiere at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
The look is all-new, with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz B-Class lower than the current model. There are also new engines and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Both B180 and B200 models employ 1.6-litre petrol engines from an all-new family called M270 and they have been designed for both transverse and longitudinal use. The B180 delivers 90kW/200Nm while the B200 is good for 115kW/250Nm.
On the diesel front, Mercedes’ venerable OM651 four-cylinder powerplant has been reduced to 1.8-litres and for the B180CDI that means 80kW/250Nm and for the B200 CDI you can chalk-up 100kW/300Nm.
Drive is via Benz’ all-new 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual.
Suspension has also been re-done and includes a new rear-end which adopts a four-link design.
Styling is substantially changed and, while still unmistakably Mercedes-Benz B-Class, the all-new model adopts a much more contemporary look with a stylish front end highlighted by the ‘corporate’ Mercedes grille and wraparound headlights plus a much more curvy rear with two-piece horizontal tail-lights.
Aerodynamics have been improved – now down to CD 0.26 thanks to a clever underbody design and optimized airflow around the front wheels. Benz says down the track it will add an ECO technology package for the all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class which will lower the drag CD even further to 0.24,
At 1557mm, the all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class is five centimetres lower than its predecessor and, flowing from this, the seat height has been reduced by 86mm. Rear seats now adopt Mercedes’ Easy-Vario-Plus system which incorporates a front passenger seat with a backrest which folds forward all the way to the cushion and fore-aft adjustment for the second row up to 140mm, boosting luggage capacity to 666-litres.
Interior design is also all-new and much more modern, but of course includes the usual ‘Benz luxury such as optional Artico leather for the dashboard.
And of course the all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class is equipped with the full range of safety features and driver aids including radar-based Collision Prevention Assist and Pre-Safe (both firsts in the compact segment), as well as internet access and Linguartronic voice control.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class goes on-sale in Europe in November.
