Mercedes-Benz has got a pretty strong product in their CLA-Class and they’re not about to jeapordise any found mojo in the name of the radically new. It’s a good recipe, and judging by the fairly minor upgrades they’ve revealed for it prior to public showing at the 2016 New York Motor Show, they’re sticking to it.
The sedan will come with some rather subtle exterior alternations as well as more equipment to be available as standard. Mercedes-Benz has also kept an ear to the ground, listening to the grumbles of the performance-hungry customer and have tried to bring their CLA 45 AMG into line with those requests too.
Starting with the CLA 250, the most obvious change is the updated front bumper that now better blends the nose with the rest of the car’s lines, towards the sides there’s little to pick out as different, and the rear sees some tweaks to the exhaust, which no longer juts out of the car’s silhouette as it did (slightly) prior.
The CLA 45 AMG looks deceptively similar to the more sedate versions but has a more pronounced front splitter with grey accented louvres, and the optional AMG Aerodynamics pack will add a larger splitter among other things. The new aero bits also follow to the car’s rear where there are four diffuser fins.
Moving to the interior and we find even less to differentiate from the current crop of CLA-Classes. To the eagle-eyed observer, you might have noticed the 8-inch screen no longer is as thick, there’s a new seat cover and added chrome on the control surfaces. Of course, those who want some extra pizzas can opt for the AMG Dinamica Interior package that predominantly drapes an Alcantara-like suede material over the seats and steering wheel.
The powetrain options are unchanged, with the CLA keeping its four petrol to one diesel variant that’s available in both ‘coupe’ and wagon form. For the firebreathing CLA 45 AMG, the engine has been tuned to output 280kW and 475Nm of torque and permits a 4.2 second 0-100km/h sprint. The Shooting Brake CLA 45, with that added weight, takes 4.3 seconds.
