Mercedes-AMG Confirms F1 Engine, Lotus Tuned Hypercar

With the interests of both the automotive and technology industry overlapping more and more these days, it’s only natural that Mercedes-Benz had a presence at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Their parent company Daimleg AG is making some big pushes into electrifying their vehicles and making them more intelligent year-over-year. Only the part we’re interested in is quite the anti-thesis to all that. Their new hypercar, which performance arm AMG is touting to heavily borrow from Formula 1 technology, was previewed at the Las Vegas convention.

Though, it was extremely brief, GTSpirit managed to snap a shot of the slide where the rear of the mysterious machine was shown off amidst lots of surrounding darkness. And as you can see, it certainly looks fast.

With its complete lack of rear window, roof-mounted air scoop and cooling vents, very wide haunches, and what looks to be a rear fin running down from said scoop all the way to the car’s rear, it’s a dead ringer for the contemporary Le Mans racers of today.

There were no further details revealed on the hypercar apart from a repetition of information that we’ve already known from the initial announcement. First off, it’s development is and eventual release is meant to commemorate the 50th anniversary of AMG and will likely use the turbocharged hybrid power unit that helped the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team win the world-champion ship.

If so, it could be derived from the 1.6-litre heavily-turbocharged V6 engine used today, with some choice modifications to ensure durability and meet street emissions and noise regulations. But it’s the hybrid system where the future car will likely we derive much of its world-beating performance from.

Mercedes-AMG has also yet to disclose how many units they plan to build, but judging from other ultra-exclusive race-derived road cars of the past, we would imagine that its no more than a few hundred. Naturally, its price will be astronomical, just like the AM-RB 001, a hypercar that Aston Martin is developing with the Red Bull Racing F1 team.
