Australians will see a unique version of the stunning Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG in local showrooms from November - just two months after its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
A direct rival for BMW's highly-acclaimed M5, the 'Benz stormer is very sharply priced at $234,900.
Power comes from an enhanced version of the AMG-tuned 6.2-litre V8 which delivers 386kW/630Nm. Cutting-edge technology, including recuperation of brake energy on the overrun has resulted in improved fuel economy (down 12 per cent to 12.6l/100kms) compared to the previous generation. 'Benz says the new E63 AMG is the world's most fuel efficient sports sedan with more than 500 horsepower (377kW).
Drive is to the rear wheels via a spectacular new AMG Speedshift 7-speed automatic featuring a wet start-off clutch which operates in a sump and replaces the previous torque converter.
The transmission has four driver-select operating modes ranging from 'C' (for everyday driving) through to the sporty 'M' mode where shifts take just 100 milliseconds. Each mode delivers revised mapping for the accelerator.
There is also a 'Race Start' function enabling extremely rapid standing starts. Zero to 100km/h takes just 4.5 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.
Underneath, the suspension system is a masterpiece with new steel spring front struts and AMG's air springs at the rear where the axle has extra negative camber. The dampers are electronically controlled and the driver can select three suspension modes - comfort, sport and sports+.
Unique for the Australian market are a rear boot spoiler, 19-inch alloy wheels and a sun protection package.
Inside are the usual spectacular AMG enhancements including high grade Nappa leather upholstery, AMG instruments and four-spoke steering wheel, lots of brushed stainless steel, a reversing camera and Parking Guidance.
