“No styling. First of all, function.”

2019 Mercedes-AMG Project One

According to Mercedes-Benz, the position of all their brands (Mercedes-Benz as the main marque, supported by sub-brands Mercedes-Benz EQ, Mercedes-Maybach, and Mercedes-AMG) exist on a scale of ‘hot and cool.’ Mercedes-Benz, on that scale, lives in the middle, with EQ on the cooler end, while Maybach heads towards hot and AMG lives at the scorching end.

On that basis, the Mercedes-AMG Project One is the hottest of them all, taking more than a light inspiration from the world of Formula 1, including its 1.6-litre turbochagred, direct-injected, W06 hybrid V6 engine. That little engine and its hybrid drivetrain will produce north of 745kW, with power going to all four wheels thanks to a pair of electric motors behind the front wheels. 0-200km/h will take less than 6-seconds, while it’ll max out at somewhere over 350km/h.

The Project One is very much a group project, with the promotional video seeing various different members of the greater Mercedes-Benz team talk about their contributions to the car. Exterior design director Robert Lesnik talks about various exterior elements like the wing and roof-mounted air-intake, while interior design director Hartmut Sinkwitz talks about how his team went about choosing the materials employed throughout the cabin.

“We followed the goal of ‘no style, first of all, function.’” — Hartmut Sinkwitz, Interior Design Director, Mercedes-AMG

Check out the video to get to know the people behind the bonkers Project One, and to get an idea of just how maniacal this hypercar will be when it arrives.
