Mercedes-AMG’s premiere sports car, the GT, had recently expanded its range to now include the range-topping GT-R – a sharper, more powerful, lightened, very green variant that is said to be a road-going version of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car despite not sharing its 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine.
However, according to a report by Autocar UK, more versions derived from the GT are forthcoming, as revealed in a conversation with AMG boss Tobias Moers. He disclosed that there will be a GT4 (positioned below the GT3 in the hierarchy) race car much like the McLaren 570S GT4 as well as more road going versions.
These will likely include a convertible version of the GT, corroborating some rumours that suggest an unveil of a drop top variant is imminent, along with indications that point to an even more powerful but perhaps a little less track-focused Black Edition.
If true, Mercedes-Benz and their AMG division may choose to wait until the tail end of the current GT’s lifecycle before pulling the wraps off the Black Edition much like the previous cars launched under that moniker.
The Mercedes-AMG GT is positioned in the market as an alternative to the traditional supercar from the likes of Lamborghini or Ferrari. Rather, the primary competitors of the GT are Porsche 911 and the Jaguar F-Type.
In the case of the 911, it’s no secret that the GT was designed to take a significant chunk out of its market share. But so far, the number of variant options for the flush sports car buyer eyeing a 911 are plentiful (Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, 4S, Targa, GTS, R, GT3, GT3 RS, Turbo, etc) while the AMG GT range is only now reaching it’s third option.
Obviously, there’s a lot of room to fill. Mercedes-AMG may not elect to offer buyers too many choices, but with the Black Series and a racier version on the way, they might have filled in every large gap in the market.
