Like a CLS but not.
Among the more hotly-anticipated reveals at the Geneva motor show has finally… uh… happened, and the Swiss venue played host to the reveal of Mercedes-AMG’s latest addition to the family, in the form of the GT 4-Door Coupe. The GT-4 will now sit as the performance 4-door flagship in the range, inhabiting a space that used to be filled by the discontinued CLS63.
The design of the GT-4 is an amalgamation of a lot of design features we’ve seen on other Mercedes-Benz models before. The fascia is definitively that of the AMG GT supercar that we’re all quite familiar with, and the rump is broadly similar too. Between those two elements is, expectedly, a swooping coupe roofline that Mercedes-Benz pioneered with the first-generation CLS, though that glasshouse is now flanked by even more pronounced and muscular bodywork, as befitting a car of this nature.
The GT-4 is available with a choice of three engines. The range kicks off with the AMG GT-4 53, which sees fitment of a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged petrol engine featuring a mild-hybrid system. The output is healthy, as you’ll see no less than 320kW from the 53 mill, which is enough to rocket the new 4-door from rest to 100km/h in 4.5-seconds. And the claimed fuel consumption is below 10L/100km, would you believe it (we don’t).
If you think it’s rather silly to have a six-cylinder mill in a car like this, fret not. The AMG GT-4 is available with a V8 mill too, in either 63 or 63S guises. The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 in the 63 maintains an enormous performance bump over the 53, to the tune of a total 430kW and 800Nm (that’s 110kW more than the 53, mind). The century sprint time for the 63 drops from 4.5-seconds in the 53 to just 3.4-seconds in the 63. Official fuel consumption is rated at 11.0L/100km, but you’d have to drive like a saint to get that figure.
The most potent AMG GT-4 comes in the form of the 63S, which uses that same V8 but gets uptuned to a scarcely-believable 470kW and 900Nm. Gaining an S also means that the flagship GT-4 reaches 100km/h 0.2-seconds sooner than the 63 (that’s 3.2-seconds), while the fuel consumption only goes up by a fraction to 11.2L/100km for the pleasure.
All that potency needs to be harnessed properly, which is why all cars get a 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, though the 63S gets a special ‘Drift’ mode that decouples the front wheels for maximum rear tyre destruction. AMG GT-4 53’s get a 9-speed torque converter automatic, while the 63 and 63S get a 9-speed dual-clutch setup replete with a ‘Race Start’ function for best takeoffs. Also standard in the V8s is rear-wheel steering which improves responsiveness, agility, and stability is a rear-wheel steering system, though this system is available optionally in the 6-cylinder 53.
The cabin of the AMG GT-4 is, like the exterior, a mix of rather familiar elements that we’ve encountered before. Stepping inside it’s clear that the dashboard is a direct copy of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, though the central tunnel, with its raised surface and cool-looking button arrangement, is a lift out of the two-door AMG GT. Also familiar is the infotainment arrangement, which can be optioned up to utilise the characteristic twin-screen setup that marries the driver instrumentation and central infotainment display behind a single piece of glass in a widescreen effect that just looks gorgeous.
The rear of the AMG GT-4 is pretty generous, given that it shares its platform with the garden-variety E-Class saloon. Of course, headroom comes at a premium and legroom is ever-so-slightly reduced, but we’re told it’s easily enough for a couple of six-footers sitting tandem. The rear bench can be optioned as either two individual seats (making it a 4-seater) or a more conventional bench. As a 5-seater, the rear bench also fold flat to maximise the cargo room.
Prices and availability timelines have not yet been detailed by Mercedes-AMG, but we expect it to be coming soon. Prices are predicted to start around £80,000 in the UK, or just over $140k in our money.
