AMG teases, but the internet produces.
Mercedes-AMG has released perhaps the most revealing teaser of the new 4-door AMG GT, which is set to receive its global debut in Geneva. A 23-second video posted on Facebook (by them) shows the car entirely undisguised for the first time, but zeroes-in on defining design details, robbing us of a full exterior shot of AMG’s new autobahn dominator.
However, it seems that some plucky chaps online have somehow gotten their hands on a sole, low-resolution, hoplessly-grainy photo of the front three-quarters of the AMG GT four-door, confirming... well everything we already know about it. The image confirms that the GT-4 will get the brands' new signature Panamericana grille, a dramatically-sloping roofline (also seen in the teaser video), and a very obvious rear wing. The AMG GT 'replaces' the V8 CLS63 in the range and is supposed to add more aggression and more distinction to the space, and it certainly appears to do just that.
The AMG GT-4 saloon will pack more power than the CLS 53, which is presently the most potent four-door coupe in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, and so you can expect to see the model debut with a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 with 450kW/850Nm, with a mild-hybrid system and all-wheel drive. In time, a 600kW hybrid model will debut (that figure being a combined output), which will come with technology from High Performance Powertrains, a sister company under Mercedes-Benz that’s responsible for developing the Project One hypercar.
The four-door AMG GT-4 was previewed by the GT Concept from last year, where Mercedes-AMG made clear its intentions to not let the Porsche Panamera and upcoming Mission E go unperturbed. The AMG GT concept has a distinctly corporate face, with thin headlights and a production-ready nose. The profile of the concept shows off its flowing, toned physique, while the rear sees a familiar combination of slim LED taillights and central exhaust tip. The AMG GT concept also intended to excite under the bonnet, as it bears a telling ‘EQ Power+’ badge on the fender-mounted side-view cameras, alluding to an electrified powertrain beneath. The car teased in the video (and in the past) has been bereft of this badge, so perhaps it’ll launch first with the bi-turbo V8 and save the EQ Power model for later.
Interestingly, in the GT Concept, the V8 under the bonnet could also work as a generator for the electric drivetrain. That feature is unlikely to make it to the production model, but the styling details like the ‘Predator’ face and pert rear end are expected to be carried through.
