Just how bored must one be?

Boredom, lack of entertainment, lack of stimulation… these things can sometimes birth the most interesting things. This writer recalls a pretty interesting evening with a group of friends and a game of ‘Ring of Fire’ that was called upon because there was nothing better to do. Admittedly, not much can be recalled after the 5th round…

But if you don’t have questionable drinking habits, you could indulge in something a little bit more productive. You could read a book, or even write one. Or if you have about half a million LEGO bricks lying around, you could build a McLaren Senna.

That is apparently the situation that struck some 30 model makers, who then devoted a total of 2,725 hours to build this 1.7-tonne model. A total of 467,854 pieces were used in the making of the Senna, with only 20,000 specially-ordered pieces. Also specially-ordered were the wheels & tyres, as well as the seats & steering wheel, all of which have come from McLaren themselves (but the tyres were made by Pirelli, of course).

What’s interesting is that while they went to the extent to integrate the roof-mounted ‘Start’ button (replete with a V8 rev sound if you blip the throttle) and even replicating the brake disc & callipers in LEGO, the doors don’t feature hinges. Instead, they wiggle in and out of place, and removing them will reveal that they weigh some 70kg each.

Another point we’d like to, uh, point out, is that in the same amount of man-hours spent on building the LEGO McLaren Senna, you could build about 9 real ones. And the real ones are the absolutely sharpest thing to drive with a McLaren badge. And they don’t have a simulated sound.
