The rarest and most powerful P1 ever claims the lap crown, and then drives home.
McLaren’s halo hypercar, the P1, may be on its way out, but it’s certainly not slowing down. After achieving the title of the fastest road car to handle the Goodwood Hill in June 2016, the P1 LM has now laid claim to the quickest lap time around the Nürburgring by a road car, after a XP1 LM prototype (that is identical to the 5 production cars that were built) posted a time of 6-minutes 43.2-seconds.
Amazingly, after that blistering run (some 2-and-a-bit seconds faster than the previous record holder, the NIO EP9 electric hypercar), the XP1 LM then promptly left the hallowed track and drove all the way back to the UK.
The record-breaking run was a cooperative project between famed racing driver Kenny Brack and Lanzante Motorsports, with the former having enjoyed success in Indy car racing and rallying, while Lanzante became a known McLaren partner after it competed in the 1995 Le Mans 24-hour race in a semi-works McLaren F1 GTR, and won.
The project was supported by McLaren and notably Pirelli, who made a specific size- and compound-unique road-legal Trofeo type just for the P1 LM. Some would say that this is an incredibly successful display for the P1 LM, because there will be no doubt of its sheer ability on the track.
