Mazda Motors Corporation has announced that their popular Mazda3 has exceeded five million units at the end of April 2016. In fact, it’s the second Mazda to ever achieve such ubiquity since the 323 passed 5 million produced units.

It’s also quite an achievement because, while the 3 is a highly regarded model, it isn’t “priced to move” as some of the other, more affordable cars in the marketplace. And a lot of those have not surpassed the Mazda3 in that respect either.

The 3 is only in its third generation, one that began with the BK series in 2003. In 2010, Mazda followed that up with the updated BL generation that lasted only three years before it was replaced in 2013 by the current BM generation car we have today.

When it was introduced, it was one of the first to sport Mazda’s new design language, KODO, and came with a new line of engines and technologies they’ve dubbed SkyActiv.

Right now, the Mazda3 is still popular among buyers, facing off competition with the Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Volkswagen Jetta, and Honda Civic.

The current-generation Mazda3 is also due for a mid-life update in 2016, with some early murmurs of it surfacing in the form of leaked pictures and internal documents.
