Mazda MX-5 Concepts - SEMA 2016

Mazda is prepping some customised versions of their MX-5 roadster to show off at the 2016 SEMA (Speciality Equipment Marketing Association) show in Las Vegas come November, and are showing them off ahead of their formal debut.

Called the MX-5 Miata (the North American term for it) Speedster Evolution and the MX-5 RF Kuro, both these unique roadsters takes inspiration from the MX-5, in styling and performance, from the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup race car that also debuted at the SEMA show , even adopting some of its lightweight components.

Starting with the Speedster Evolution with its White Ether exterior finish. It follows the original MX-5 Speedster that debuted at the SEMA show last year and builds on its lightweight windscreen-less take on the compact open top. Somehow they’ve removed a further 45kg from the original and nearly 160kg lighter than a base MX-5.

On to the MX-5 RF Kuro. Obviously it’s based upon the hotly anticipated MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback). The word “Kuro” actually means “charcoal” in Japanese, and as such the car is painted in a unique semi-matte colour.

It rides on 17-inch RAYS forged wheels and and adjustable suspension from the MX-5 racer wears 215/45 BF Goodrich Rival G-Force tyres. Both concepts were conceived by Mazda Design Americas to showcase contrasting directions that create a “Mazda Premium” experience while paying homage to Mazda’s performance heritage. They were designed and built in-house by Mazda’s Design team in Irvine, California.
