Mazda has started work on a new production facility in Salamanca City, Mexico (250kms northwest of Mexico City).
Due to start production mid-2013, the new plant will produce 140,000 Mazda2 and Mazda3 models annually – at this stage for sale in the growing central and South American markets.
Mazda will invest some $500 million to establish the Mexican plant.
In addition, Mazda is establishing a sales company in Brazil, to distribute Mazda vehicles imported from Japan (until the Mexico plant is operational). The Brazilian new car market is the world’s fourth-largest, accounting for 3.5 million vehicles each year (behind on China, U.S.A and Japan).
