The talk of the Tokyo Motor Show is this car, Mazda’s RX-VISION, which has the pundits already saying this rotary-powered sports car will walk in the footsteps of the hallowed RX-7 and RX-8.

That might be jumping the gun a bit as the RX-Vision is only a concept but the ingredients are all there – rotary engine in the front, long bonnet/short cabin design and it is rear-wheel-drive.

Not just any rotary engine mind you – the RX-VISION debuts Mazda’s all-new SKYACTIV-R powerplant.

Just like the SKYACTIV-G petrol and SKYACTIV-D petrol and diesel engines we already know, this time Mazda has thrown this ground-breaking technology at the rotary engine in the name of fuel consumption, emissions and reliability.

No details yet but the talk from Mazda in Tokyo is while there are currently no rotary-engined cars in its current lineup, development of the SKYACTIV-R engine has been ongoing for some years leading to the unveiling of the RX-VISION.

In the design studio the intent for the RX-VISION was to pare-away the non-essential elements to make the newcomer a true front engine/rear drive sports car.

That means a wide body with short overhangs, the long bonnet and taut cabin layout.

Mazda’s RX-VISION concept car shown in Tokyo is a two-seater measuring 4,389mm in length and sits on massive 20-inch alloy wheels.
