Business is booming for Australian new car dealers with last month recording the best March sales total in history of 105,054 vehicles.
This is the first time we have seen sales beat the 100,000 mark in the month of March.
Market leader Toyota also enjoyed its best-ever March with sales of 19,082 vehicles and, with 48,986 vehicles sold in the first three months of the year, Toyota has a lead of more than 20,000 vehicles over second-best Mazda.
Toyota Corolla racked-up sales of 4,261 last month to be Australia’s best-selling individual model.
Mazda’s highly-praised all-new CX-3 compact SUV was a major ‘assist’ in the Japanese marque surging to best-ever March sales of 10,217 vehicles to rank Australia’s number two brand overall. Mazda also posted its best-ever first quarter result of 28,280 sales and sits solidly in the number two ranking behind only Toyota.
Some 814 Mazda CX-3 were sold in just nine days following its launch last month, Mazda3 was Australia’s number two best-selling individual model (3,558 sales), Mazda CX-5 mid-size SUV posted its strongest individual month on-record (2,344 sales)and the BT50 ute recorded its best-ever March (1,278 sales).
Holden was third in March with sales of 8,571 vehicles and ranks third in the quarter with sales of 24,781 vehicles – an astonishing 3,499 behind Mazda…how times have changed.
Hyundai was fourth in March with sales of 8,709 vehicles, ahead of the still-resurgent Nissan (7,138). Nissan sales for the first quarter were 17,659 – that’s 2,934 up on the same time last year and the Japanese giant now enjoys a market share of 6.4 per-cent (5.5 per-cent in March 2014).
Of the top-10 best-selling brands, only Holden and Ford recorded sales in the first quarter of 2015 which were lower than last year.
Supporting the surge in new car sales is the latest CommSec Car Affordability Index which shows new car affordability is at its best level in the 40 years since the Index began.
