While Volkswagen has terminated production of the New Beetle, arch-rival BMW is full steam ahead with its MINI brand about to launch a major facelift.
Due for international launch on 18 September, the facelifted MINI range will feature a new 3.8l/100kms diesel engine, upgrades for the petrol powerplants and extensive styling changes inside and out.
The new MINI Cooper D will be more powerful than the current model with 82kW at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 270Nm from 1,750, rpm - but in the EU5 test cycle, it averaged fuel consumption of juts 3.8l/100kms and low exhaust emissions of 99g/km. It’s an aluminium 1.6-litre turbo-diesel with common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger which is not only more fuel efficient, it’s also more responsive – zero to 100km/h in 9.7 seconds.
For the 1.6-litre petrol engines, MINI will introduce BMW’s VALVETRONIC variable valve management system for improved response and fuel economy. MINI Cooper will be good for 90kW of power while Cooper S will deliver 135kW.
Externally look for new bumpers and air intakes (required for pedestrian safety) plus new LED lights, side indicators and other details. There’s also new colours and extra individual customization options.
For the interior, MINI will introduce new audio and air-conditioning controls, new seats and trims and – again – more opportunities for individualism. Optional interior ambient lighting will use three LEDs to provide 756 different shades of colour.
Also on the options list are adaptive headlights.
Across all models are detail changes to improve practicality and ergonomics – such as, in the Clubman model, a retractable roller-type luggage compartment cover and a set belt guide to help access for rear seat passengers.
