Toyota Australia today showcased its final local production run of the last ever Toyota Camry that will be built at its Altona plant until the end of 2017.
Toyota have built over 3.2million vehicles since it started production in 1963 and will be the last of local manufacturers to close after Ford and Holden also shutdown from 2016.
Speaking at a special ceremony for the employees and key stallholders, Toyota Australia President Dave Buttner vowed the last Camry would be the best.
We're extremely proud to launch the new-look Camry," Mr Buttner said.
"It's the culmination of almost four years' hard work and is the biggest mid-cycle update we've ever embarked on.
"Although this will be the last car we build in Australia, we have vowed that it will be the best. That means we are aiming to achieve the best safety, quality and efficiency results when compared to other Camry-manufacturing plants around the world.
"Our team members have already been working extremely hard. I have no doubt that this will be our best ever vehicle and will leave a long-lasting legacy of our time as a vehicle manufacturer in Australia."
Most of the changes have been made to the exterior of the Camry, with major interior change being an update to the center stack.
According to Mr Buttner every panel besides the roof had been redesigned.
"This is truly the boldest Camry yet, with exciting, dynamic styling that is sure to turn heads," Mr Buttner said.
"We have been careful not to compromise style over substance and have maintained all the traditional strengths that current buyers love."
Whilst the majority of the design was handled out of the USA, Mr Buttner told Carshowroom.com.au “Toyota Australia through its technical center out at Monsah had some input but the fundamental design was done in the USA, but of course we always input our local taste”.
Toyota expect to build around 270,000 Camry’s in the next three years with around 190,000 of those being exported to overseas markets including the Middle East, New Zealand and for the very first time around 3,000 a year will be exported to Thailand.
CarShowroom.com.au will be attending the national launch early next month, where the full pricing and specifications will be reviled.
