When BMW’s i8 plug-in hybrid sports car goes on-sale later this year it will be the world’s first offered with available laser light technology.
First seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011, the laser light technology delivers a headlight beam range of 600 metres - effectively double the range of standard LED lights.
And the laser light system is actually 30 per-cent more fuel-efficient than the already fuel-efficient LED lights.
Laser light diodes are ten times smaller than conventional light diodes, so in the BMW i8 the height of the reflector has been reduced from 9.0cm to less than 3.0cm. Smaller size means less weight and also openS-up new design possibilities for automotive stylists.
BMW says laser lights are its future and the technology will be rolled-out to other models.
