The sublime hypercar maker is now looking for greater volume.

We’re not sure what air they breathe over at Koenigsegg, but it must be some good stuff. From their hyper-engineered hypercars to their groundbreaking technological advancements, the Swedish company has always revelled in the fact that their relatively small volume means they can explore and experiment more than other carmakers can, with every breakthrough aimed squarely at the improvement of driving fun & penultimate performance.

But perhaps they’re bored of building what might be about 10 cars a year or whatever the number is, because today they’ve announced they’re joining arms with longtime collaborative partner NEVS (neé Saab) to take on “new and untapped segments,” and more specifically “enabling the development of vehicle models in higher volumes, with emphasis on electrification.” Sounds a lot like Christian von Koenigsegg has beef with Tesla (or Elon Musk, but who doesn’t).

“Koenigsegg is breaking new ground, capitalising on our unique technology, performance track record and market position to explore and develop new products. This partnership will create the best conditions for Koenigsegg to accelerate growth in the hyper car market, as well as enabling us to break ground into an untapped market segment together with NEVS. We very much look forward to working together with NEVS to develop products that ensure a sustainable future.” – Christian von Koenigsegg, Founder & CEO, Koenigsegg

Koenigsegg & NEVS aren’t strangers to each other, having worked together on various projects under the stewardship of either company. However the deepening of this relationship enables both companies to fully capitalise on “synergies between their geographical footprints, experiences and competencies… leveraging both of the companies’ strengths.”

“Koenigsegg is an enticing company developing advanced cars with unique technology and with a customer base that is one of a kind. To be able to expand our investment in the Swedish automotive industry through a company that we know and have an established relationship with, is an important step for us. We have both competencies and facilities to support Koenigsegg on their journey forward, something we look very much forward to.” – Kai Johan Jiang, Chairman of the Board of Directors, NEVS AB

NEVS has taken a 20% stake in Koenigsegg’s parent company (valued at €150-million) to formalise the relationship, and will commit a further €130-million to secure a 65% stake in a joint-venture company, with the remaining 35% going to Koenigsegg in exchange for its “intellectual property, technology licenses, and product design.”
