Skoda reveals that their all-new SUV will indeed be called Kodiaq.

‘Kodiaq’ Confirmed As Skoda’s Upcoming Large SUV's Name

Czech automaker Skoda has officially revealed the name of the oft-rumoured SUV it has in the works: Kodiaq. With this news, Skoda has confirmed a name that the motoring scene has been throwing around for quite a while now.

The name, of course, refers to the Kodiak bear that lives on a remote island off the southern coast of Alaska and in late December 2015, it was found that Skoda had registered the name ‘Kodiaq’, fuelling speculation that an SUV introduction was coming very soon.

Due for a full unveil later in 2016, possibly during the Paris Motor Show, followed by a launch window in early 2017, the Kodiaq will be Skoda’s first SUV offering and the most off-road capable vehicle in their line-up after the Yeti crossover.

Slated to use the Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform (Skoda, after all, being owned by Volkswagen), the Kodiaq will share underpinnings with the Tiguan. Despite that connection, Skoda has confirmed that, at 4.70 metres, the Kodiaq will be significantly larger than the Tiguan and will be able to seat seven comfortably.

In terms of the SUV’s exterior or interior design, we suppose we’ll have to wait until the full unveil for a clean look, but we’re expecting it to bear a strong resemblance to Skoda’s Vision S concept from the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, which did inspire confidence in Skoda’s design aesthetic when applied to larger vehicles.

There’s no information yet to go on as to what lies underneath the Kodiaq’s hood, but it would make sense for Skoda leverage Volkswagen’s strong range of engines such as the 2.0-litre TDI with the possibility of even a petrol-electric hybrid on the cards – a first for Skoda.
