That’s right. A steering wheel.
“This steering wheel concept lives in your home and becomes your trusted companion.” Put aside the heebie-jeebies for a second, because we’d like to introduce you to Sayer. Sayer is what Jaguar-Land Rover believes is the future of mobility, at some point after 2040, where motoring might not actually include owning an actual car.
Voice-activated, Sayer runs on artificial intelligence that can purportedly “carry out hundreds of tasks.” The Sayer system could be the key into an exclusive “on-demand service club,” allowing owners (of a steering wheel) to call upon connected, autonomous electric cars when needed, where needed.
According to JLR, Sayer is capable of anticipating your needs and predicting your desires. If you have a meeting at 8am tomorrow morning, Sayer can be requested to schedule a car, which will arrive on-time based on its predictions of when you will wake up, how long you’ll take to get ready, and when you’ll actually step out the door. It’ll even go as far as to letting you know about portions of your journey that you might “enjoy driving yourself,” because heaven forbid you be allowed to figure that out on your own.
Named after revered Jaguar designer Malcolm Sayer, the “beautifully sculpted piece of art” is part of JLR’s display at the upcoming ‘Jaguar-Land Rover Tech Fest’ that will take place at the Central St. Martin’s art, design and technology college in London, which is open to the public and feature on a Jaguar future vision concept that we’ll know more about in the coming days.
Is this the future? It might well be. But for today, it’s awfully odd. It also really isn’t all that pretty to our eyes, which is surprising to say the least, considering how gorgeous JLR’s recent introductions have been.
