It’s a sad day.
British luxury marque Jaguar has taken the supercharged V6 petrol variants of its XE, XF, F-Pace and XJ in the UK due to tightening emissions regulations, it’s been reported. Thankfully, the F-Type sports car will continue to be offered with the much-loved motor thanks to its relatively small sales numbers, granting it an exception to the new tailpipe rulings.
The XE S and XF S, the two saloon variants that make use of the sonorous V6, have been replaced with XE 300 and XF 300 variants respectively, both utilising 220kW four-cylinder turbocharged Ingenium petrol mills. Jaguar is taking a surprisingly bright tone with the change though, saying that customers can now enjoy similar performance (down 60kW but with a lot more torque) delivered with greater efficiency, though we doubt those eyeing a V6 Jag will be quite so upbeat.
While the supercharged V6 models were lusted after by driving enthusiasts thanks to its perky responses and drool-inducing vocals, they made up just 2% of sales in the UK. As such, it was calculated to be too costly to retool the engine to meet the stricter WLTP emissions regulations that will come into effect on the 1st of September in Europe. The engine will continue to be offered on North American models though, but it has not yet been communicated by Jaguar-Land Rover Australia if the moves in the UK will affect local availability.
