Jaguar (and sister company Land Rover) have been rather vocal at lauding the merits of their range of new high-tech, big power petrol and diesel engine available across both brands, called Ingenium. The first to use the newest motor from that range, though, will be the Jags.

Specifically, it’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that produces a hearty 221kW and 400Nm. It uses the same block as other Ingenium motors, but has had some modifications in tune to lift the output to an impressive altitude for its displacement.

The engine first made its appearance under the bonnet of the new entry-level F-Type variant, producing an identical pair of peak figures. Presumably, now that’s it’s been run through the trial by fire process of being tasked with sports car duties, it’s ready for the prime time deployment.

Due to arrive first in the F-Pace SUV, XF midsize saloon, and XE compact executive saloon later this year, the engine will no doubt spread before long to various Land Rover models as well as the broader pack of Jaguars going forward.

In the lightest in the trio of announced models to receive this new engine, the rear-driven XE will boast a 5.7 second 0-100km/h sprint time while the F-Pace SUV will manage that same dash in a marginally slower 6.0 seconds.

Perhaps more impressive, though, is the fuel economy achievable in spite of its performance. JLR claims that in a combined cycle, 6.7-litres/100km is achievable while average CO2 emissions are pegged at 153g/km.

When it does arrive, it will sit at the top of the Ingenium-powered range of Jaguar engines available for the XE, XF, and F-Pace, starting with a 147kW version of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder mill, followed by its 177kW twin, and now capped off with a new 221kW sibling.

Ostensibly, Jaguar plans to keep their existing range of supercharged 3.0-litre V6 engines as well to be their primary performance offering. Alternatively, the Ingenium range also includes a 2.0-litre diesel that delivers 177kW and 500Nm.
