In Korea Hyundai has taken the wraps from its new ‘IONIQ’ next generation hybrid.
The good-looking four-door hatchback ushers-in new thinking for Hyundai and boasts some impressive technology.
For starters, the Hyundai IONIQ sits on a chassis created to carry a choice of three different powertrains – electric, plug-in hybrid or hybrid.
Reduced weight was also a priority and Hyundai will manufacture the IONIQ with non-structural bodywork (bonnet and tailgate) and some suspension components from aluminium – the total adding up to a 45 per-cent weight saving.
Hyundai has also set-up the IONIQ to deliver high quality ride and handling. To that end we note positioning of the batteries forward and low as well as dual lower arm multi-link rear suspension.
Power comes from Hyundai’s new direct injection 1.6-litre ‘Kappa’ petrol engine.
