With tough new emissions rules imminent in both Europe and North America, Korean manufacturer Hyundai is ahead of the game, announcing some all-new additions to its engine lineup.

The ‘Gamma’ 1.6 T-GD I engine took more than four years to develop at a cost of $58.9 million and is a 1.6-litre direct injection petrol engine with a manifold-integrated twin scroll turbocharger. Maximum power is 152 kW at 6000 rpm and peak torque of 265Nm is available from 1750 rpm.

Hyundai’s other newcomer is the Euro6 R 2.0 diesel. Delivering an impressive 110 kW/386 nM, Hyundai’s diesel meets the tough Euro6 regulations which require a reduction in exhaust nitrogen oxide emissions of 56 per cent.

“Due to strict environmental regulations and policies that vary from nation to nation, competition in the development of powertrains and other core technologies is intensifying. Hyundai Motor will accelerate its efforts to develop future powertrains that feature high performance and eco-friendly engines and transmissions, “ explained Woong-Chul Yang, Hyundai’s vice president.

No word yet from Hyundai Australia on local plans for these high-tech new engines.
