Hyundai has flagged future direct injection, turbocharged diesel engines are a major focus of its future powertrains.
The Korean giant has just concluded its 12th international powertrain conference and, perhaps with a nod to growing sales in Europe, turbo-diesels were the hot topic.
With 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre direct injection turbo-diesels already being produced, Hyundai says future engines are underway based on its U, R and S powerplants and these are also earmarked for markets in China and North America.
Highlighting its upcoming petrol lineup, Hyundai displayed its new Kappa turbocharged 1.0-litre, three-cylinder 12-valve engine which develops an impressive 78kW/137Nm.
Flex-fuel engines are also under development.
Further, Hyundai pointed to more development of transmissions. Hyundai was the first manufacturer to develop in-house and eight-speed automatic for rear-wheel-drive vehicles and we can expect further improvements aimed at redcuing weight and improved fuel consumption.
