Hyundai Australia (HMCA) have introduced a new special edition of their Veloster called the Street Turbo with only 200 examples being produced and comes with over $3,000 of additional equipment and Australia-specific suspension tuning.
The Veloster Street Turbo is based on the Veloster Series II Turbo Plus, but priced at a $1,000 premium over the donor car. But if Hyundai’s claim that there really is that much worth of extra kit loaded up, it should still add even more value for money for a warm hatch that’s already offers admirable bang for its quirky buck.
Starting with the Veloster Street Turbo’s exterior, Hyundai has added semi-gloss 18-inch RAYS Gram light alloy wheels as well as additional black inserts on the front grille, front spoiler, side mirror housings, roof spoiler, side skirts, and rear diffuser.
Inside, the Street Turbo features the Veloster’s Turbo Sports Blue pack that gives the cabin blue accents, heated and ventilated leather bucket seats, blue contrast stitching with embroidered ‘Street’ logos, and unique floor mats.
To give Australian buyers of the Veloster Street Turbo a more involving and better tuned driving experience, Hyundai’s local chassis development team was tasked with giving it a more finely tuned handling and steering characteristics.
“At Veloster Series II’s launch last year we incorporated reduced-diameter front stabiliser bars across the range to allow for more independent front-wheel movement,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s General Manager Product Engineering, Hee Loong Wong.
“In Veloster Series II SR Turbo, the front stabiliser bar diameter was reduced from 24mm to 22mm, and that bar – together with the bespoke dampers and firmer spring rates we specified for the car – also works extremely well with the RAYS Gram Lights alloy wheels on the new Special Edition,"
“Like the Series II Turbo, the Special Edition has impressively sharp turn-in and more aggressive drive out of corners, giving it a ‘playful’ character which allows the rear to be more actively involved during high-speed cornering. That ‘playfulness’ also is enhanced by the Street Special Edition’s driver-adjustable three-mode Flex Steer system.”
Under the hood, the Veloster Street Turbo’s guts aren’t changed from the standard Veloster Turbo, powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Gamma engine producing 150kW and 265Nm. HMCA is offering the new Veloster Street Turbo special edition for $34,990 equipped with a 6-speed manual or for $37,490 with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
