There was a time when Hyundai Australia said its i40 sedan was not coming to Australia to join the good-looking i40 wagon – “too close to the i45 sedan,” Hyundai said.
Fortunately common sense has prevailed and the European-design Hyundai i40 sedan is now on-sale, priced from $29,990.
Specifications are very impressive and reflect the Hyundai i40’s target of sales success in Europe.
Like the Hyundai i40 Tourer (wagon), the sedan version is powered by either a 131kW/214Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 100kW/330Nm 1.7-litre turbo-diesel. Fuel consumption is as low as 4.7l/100kms (diesel manual).
Safety is also impressive (5-star ANCAP) thanks to abundant technologies including nine airbags, active anti-whiplash head restraints, vehicle stability management and cornering brake control.
Styling (done at Hyundai’s European studios in Russelsheim, Germany) continues the company’s ‘fluidic sculpture design language’ with flowing lines, a curvy front-end and sloping roof. Nice LED DRLs at the front and sporty three-strip LED tail-lights accentuate the contemporary look and European styling influences on the Hyundai i40 sedan.
Inside, the classy look and quality materials of the i40 Tourer extend to the sedan. Elite and Premium models score seven-inch touch screen satellite navigation with Navteq mapping and SUNA traffic updates, a premium audio system and solar windows with tinted rear privacy glass and automatic front windscreen de-fog. Range-topping premium models add extras like a rear-view camera, adaptive front headlights, heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.
