Hyundai’s already well-credentialed i30 small car range has been boosted by the addition of a new 1.6-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine.

The newcomer joins the existing 2.0-litre petrol and 1.6-litre CRDi turbo-diesel engines in the i30 lineup. Currently the new engine is only available in SX model hatchbacks.

It’s a high-tech, modern engine with excellent fuel economy that has achieved a five-star rating in the Green Vehicle Guide (for the 1.6-litre petrol SX model with manual transmission).

Maximum power is 89kW at 6200 rpm, peak torque of 153nm is delivered at 4200 rpm and fuel economy is as low as 6.5l/100kms. Emissions are rated at 155g/km.

Hyundai is claiming segment leadership for fuel economy with the new engine.

The i30SX 1.6-litre petrol five-speed manual becomes the price leader for the i30 with a retail price of $19,390.
