All the benefits of zero-emissions motoring without the downsides of an EV.
Korean carmaker Hyundai is, like a lot of other carmakers, betting heavily on ‘alternative-powered’ vehicles for the future. However unlike a lot of other carmakers, Hyundai’s going heavy on hydrogen with some US$6.7-billion earmarked for FCEV development over the next few years. But for right now, the company’s just delivered their first Nexo FCEV to a customer in California, and they’re being quite loud about it.
For good reason too: The Nexo is not just the brand’s fuel-cell halo, but it’s also Hyundai’s technological flagship. The fact it can do 666km on a single tank of hydrogen almost becomes secondary when you take into account the fact that it comes with advanced driver assistance features like lane-keep assist & warning, intelligent cruise control, automatic high beam, and even ‘Remote Smart Parking Assist’ which allows the Nexo to park or ‘unpark’ itself from a parallel or perpendicular space autonomously.
There’s even a Blind-Spot View Monitor that shows the side views of the Nexo on the central infotainment screen whenever you hit the indicator. This essentially removes the blind spot from the car, making navigating across lanes that much safer.
The buyer of the first Nexo was Todd Hochard of Ventura, California. When met at the Keyes Hyundai dealership in Van Nuys, it was revealed that he was no ordinary car buyer. Over the last 15 years, Hochard’s had some form of environmentally-conscious vehicle, starting first with a hybrid and including some battery-electric vehicles along the way. The Nexo is just the latest in his line of earth-friendly vehicles, and it’s expected to last him for many years to come.
