Honda’s Electric Micro Commuter

Just last week we drove from Sydney’s CBD to Cronulla beach in the afternoon peak hour – the journey took over an hour of which 40 minutes – 40 minutes! – was in the grid-locked CBD breathing exhaust fumes. Honda has a solution – the electric Micro Commuter.

Sure traffic congestion in Australian cities pales into insignificance compared to Tokyo, but the reality is many cross-town trips could easily be accomplished in the Honda Micro Commuter and as well as the zero exhaust emissions, its compact size would reduce gridlock.

Car Showroom saw the concept Honda in the metal at last year’s Tokyo Motor. Now developed further, Honda says the Micro Commuter owes its creation to upcoming micro-car products to meet regulations in both Japan and Europe.

The battery and drive train sit under the rear floor to optimize interior space and minimize dimensions. Inside is a seat for the driver and two small seats for children or you can swap those two seats for one adult-sized passenger seat.

Instrumentation, audio and reversing camera information are contained on a tablet device which is individually powered by solar cells. Honda says it is researching further solar cells to assist in charging the Micro Commuter’s drive battery.
