Caltex will install 10 pumps in New South Wales to sell its new 85 per cent ethanol Bio E-Flex fuel (also known as E85).

The move has been endorsed by Holden ahead of its launch of the VE Series II Commodore – the first Australian-made car to run on the cleaner fuel which can cut emissions by as much as 50 per cent compared to normal unleaded petrol.

Caltex plans to increase the number of Bio E-Flex pumps to 100 in metropolitan and regional locations by mid-2011.

“For Holden to bring flex-fuel vehicles to market, it is imperative that customers can buy the fuel from a network of pumps that are easily accessed. The commitment by Caltex to install 100 pumps by mid-2011 will help make this a reality,” explained Holden’s Energy and Environment Director, Richard Marshall.

Holden’s VE Series II range will have the ability to use Bio E-Flex, E10 or Premium Unleaded fuel. Holden says Bio E-Flex has a higher octane rating that petrol, so while there is less energy in the fuel (resulting in higher fuel consumption), engine power is likely to increase.

Bio E-Flex (or E85) fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions, reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and its major component (Ethanol) is a renewable resource.
