Holden moved one step closer to launching the Volt electric vehicle when it unveiled the first dedicated battery re-charge station.
Powered by Origin Energy’s pure GreenPower, the ChargePoint station is situated outside Holden’s Salmon Street, Port Melbourne headquarters. That’s convenient for many Melburnians as Port Melbourne is now a rapidly growing business/light industry/shipping and residential area.
Using a dedicated level two, 3.3kW charging station, Holden Volt (an extended range EV) can be re-charged in less than four hours.
To assist development of the Volt, ChargePoint is also installing six additional green energy charging stations in Holden design and engineering facilities, including the Lang Lang Proving Ground a couple of hours south-west of Melbourne.
“Volt can travel a distance of up to 80 kilometres on pure electric driving – more than enough for most drivers to commute every day without visiting a petrol station,” explained Holden’s Greg Tyus. “You can drive emission free and recharge at home from a standard power outlet in less than six hours for around $2.50.”
When the Volt’s battery is out of charge its 1.4-litre petrol engine becomes an in-car generator providing Holden’s good-looking newcomer a total range of more than 600kms.
