Holden has released details of the next-generation Commodore, developed in close relation GM’s group-wide Insignia platform, with some camouflaged prototypes previewing a large sedan with a coupe-like roofline tentatively referred to as the Sportback.
In addition to this base body style, there will reportedly be a Sportwagon variant with shooting brake proportions as well as a more rugged and higher-riding version as well. We’ll of course get more confirmed details as the early 2018 launch date draws closer.
It will be built upon GM’s new German-engineered E2 global architecture. Holden says that the next Commodore will be the most technologically advanced car to wear the badge, with features such as an all-wheel drive system, torque vectoring, adaptive suspension, and a company-first nine-speed automatic transmission to name but a few.
At least one V6 will power the next-gen car, one outputting 230kW and 370Nm in the flagship variant - no doubt using some method of forced induction. We won’t jump to the conclusion that it’s the same 2.7-litre unit seen in the current Insignia. Although it could be fairly similar to the engine fitted to the third-generation 2017 Buick LaCrosse - a 3.6-litre naturally-aspirated unit with a nearly identical output.
That engine, if proved to be accurate, does have a lot of scope for higher performance. And due to GM intending to share as much technology between its properties, it won’t be surprising to learn that motor powering a reincarnated high-performance HSV version. No mention of a V8 yet, though.
With credentials like those, Holden is bullish that the all-new Commodore will be a fitting continuation of the engaging driving dynamics that its predecessors were lauded for.
Jeremy Tassone, Holden’s Engineering Group Manager for Vehicle Development, said: “Holden has been engaged in this program from the outset to ensure the next-generation Commodore lives up to its legendary nameplate. We know the first imported Commodore will come under a lot of scrutiny and we know we have a lot to live up to – this car delivers in spades”
“Although we are remain in the early stages of the Holden development process, this is an absolutely world-class car. We’ve taken a precision-engineered German car and endowed it with Holden DNA. It drives like a Commodore should. We’ve had our Holden engineers engaged in this global program from the outset and we’re continuing to do extensive tuning and development, racking up thousands of kilometres, at our Lang Lang proving ground in Victoria to ensure it’s got that Holden magic.”
“The next-generation Commodore will reset benchmarks in its class, as has every Commodore since 1978,” said Holden’s Executive Director of Sales, Peter Keley.
“What Commodore will also continue to do is carry the family in space and comfort. Commodore will also race in Supercars from 2018 and continue to be on the road as police cars.
“This next-generation vehicle is changing and bringing incredible technology and refinement with it but will continue to offer customers that quintessential Commodore experience they have loved for nearly four decades.
“With the first-ever imported Commodore, we’re delivering our customers an absolutely world-beating vehicle, with the space, practicality, technology and driving pleasure that Commodore has always provided. This is a different kind of Commodore to what has come before but lives up to the nameplate in every respect and will carry our heritage with pride.”
