GM’s Extra Funding for Opel/Vauxhall Good News For Australia

With Holden considering the stylish Vauxhall Insignia small car for Australia, the announcement that General Motors (GM) will invest an extra €1.9 billion into its European operations is potentially good news.

As reported in our 20 January news story, Car Showroom spotted an undisguised Insignia under test in Melbourne as Holden evaluates the good-looking European for local sale.

A viable Europen business for GM could also open doors for exports of Holden vehicles and components such as engines.

“It is of vital importance for GM to demonstrate our commitment for our European operations,” explained Ed Whitacre, GM Chairman and CEO. “Beyond the purely financial aspects, we see this as a major step towards instilling renewed trust and confidence into Opel/Vauxhall’s customers, employees, business partners, unions, dealers and European governments.”

The extra funding more than triples GM’s original €600 million investment pledge.
