Hailing down the iconic cab down under.
The London Taxi Co., which is now a subsidiary of the Zhejian Geely Holding Group, and who also owns Volvo, has won a contract valued at over 405 million yuan (or 81.1 million Australian Dollars) to supply its vehicles to Australia and New Zealand.
That means over the next five years, you’ll be noticing an influx of London Taxis as they plan to bring over 1,000 units as cabs to the major cities in both countries within that period.
Geely, which has its headquarters in Hangzhou,China had previously announced in 2015 that it would invest an additional 300 million pounds (AUD562 million) into the construction of London Taxi’s research and development centre.
As of now, the cars themselves – which are called the TX4 – are built at the London Taxi factory in Coventry, England. Its new R&D centre will be located close by.
Cities such as Perth already have around 100 TX4s in their fleet of cabs, with other locations such as Canberra, Wollongong also seeing service from the iconic cabs.
