As part of a global alignment which includes the World Rally Championship and American NASCAR racing, Ford Australia has revealed its new local V8 Supercar Falcons will fly the colours of its EcoBoost technology.
Ford’s local racing division, FPR, has released these first pictures of its 2013 Car Of The Future (COTF) Falcon racer which hits the tracks next year.
EcoBoost is Ford’s new fuel-sipping engine technology combining direct injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing to provide strong performance while reducing fuel consumption and exhaust C02 emissions. EcoBoost technology is currently available in Ford Australia’s German-sourced Mondeo mid-sizer and the locally-produced Falcon.
Regular Car Showroom readers will know the EcoBoost Falcon, with its 179kW/353Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, is one of our favourite full-size sedans. Priced at $37,325 (XT) and $46,735 (G6E), the turbocharged Falcon delivers not only sharp performance (zero to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds for the G6E) but improved driving dynamics thanks to the lower weight of the high-tech 2.0-litre powerplant.
No question the FPR EcoBoost COTF racer will be considerably faster.
The EcoBoost livery for the FPR Falcon (which will be replaced with sponsors logos before kick-off of the 2013 racing season) reinforces the local team’s part in the global Ford motorsport operation and also provides a link between the Falcon road cars and the racers.
Like many of the technical innovations appearing in road cars, direct injection, variable valve timing and turbocharging all have origins in motorsport before flowing onto the production line.
