The current 6th-generation Mustang is by far the most widely available version of the iconic American muscle car, which has been around for over 50 years now. It clearly has appeal the world over, prompting Ford to expand the market in which they’re available.
Proving this is the announcement Ford made a couple of days ago that it’s official the most popular sports car of 2016, a sales surge that was obviously helped by the 140 countries that the Mustang is now sold as well as offering it with a more fuel efficient EcoBoost four-cylinder engine.
Last year alone, Ford put over 150,000 Mustangs into the hands of new owners, according to IHS Markit vehicle registration data. Overall global sales increased 6 percent over 2015, fueled by international market growth up 101 percent with almost 45,000 Mustang vehicles sold outside the United States.
“The legacy of Mustang continues to grow, and in places it never reached before,” said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang marketing manager. “We continue to make it available in new markets, and drivers in those markets continue to respond with resounding approval.”
With more than 395,000 total units of the 6th-gen Mustang built since its 2015 (with 98,000 of those counted as those sold outside of the United States) and a model facelift recently revealed, its possible that the Mustang’s growth spurt and new global fan base is only starting on its stride.
