The ‘Pros’ and ‘Cons’ of Big Cars, Small Cars and compact SUV just got more complicated with Ford Australia revealing its upcoming EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder XT model Falcon will return combined cycle fuel consumption of 8.1l/100kms – 18 per cent less than the equivalent six-cylinder model.
That’s better than Australia’s best-selling compact SUV, the Subaru Forester (9.6l100kms in automatic) and almost identical to automatic versions of our best-selling small car (and best-selling car outright last year) the Mazda3 – rated at 8.2l/100kms.
Exhaust CO2 emissions are impressively low too – scoring 192g/km. Falcon EcoBoost and LPG EcoLPi are the only locally-produced large cars under 200g/km in that department.
The EcoBoost Falcon goes on-sale in April and is powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine Ford uses in the Mondeo Zetec. However thanks to some local fettling, performance is up with maximum power listed at 179kW and peak torque at 353Nm. Fuel consumption for Ford Falcon EcoBoost G6 and G6E models is rated at 8.5l/100kms.
While Ford Australia has also confirmed prices for the three EcoBoost Falcon models: $37,235 (XT), $40,835 (G6) and $46,735 (G6E).
