Well ahead of its December launch, the 2017 Holden Astra has managed to bag the highest maximum safety rating from testing authority ANCAP. James Goodwin, CEO of the independent safety group, said, “The new Astra will enter showrooms with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, providing another new option for consumers in the competitive small car segment.”
The rating, awarded to RS and RS-V models, is based on tests conducted by Euro NCAP on the Opel Astra on which the Holden is based. The rating was also boosted by the inclusion of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane support systems as standard fare. The entry-level R, which only loses out on the aforementioned active systems, remains unrated by ANCAP.
Notably, the Astra also received ‘Good’ ratings for pedestrian safety, thanks to top scores for the front bumper test for protection during pedestrian collisions. Pelvic protection for passengers was also rated as ‘Good.’
Emphasising the value of active safety systems, Goodwin went on to say that “real-world safety benefits are being achieved by these important safety technologies, and we encourage consumers to choose a model with these technologies fitted.”
