Resurgent upstart brand Fisker has teased what will most likely be its highest-volume product to date, a sub-US$40,000 electric crossover that has not yet been named. Despite being nameless, it’s very clear that Fisker has aimed this car to hit its competitors right where it hurts: Think Tesla, and then Model Y.
The company claims that this machine will be powered by an 80kWh lithium-ion battery (no solid-state graphene tech here), giving the crossover a range just under 500km per charge. Prototyping is set to begin at the end of this year, ahead of a full reveal in 2020, and production commencement in 2021.
As for production, Fisker is touting its latest recruit. Don Jackson is a veteran in the US automotive manufacturing space, with over a decade of experience optimising and overseeing production & quality for both Volkswagen & Toyota, before striking it out on his own as a consultant in the same field.
Jackson’s hiring comes at an opportune moment, as Fisker narrows its search for a manufacturing site to 11 possible locations throughout the United States.
“I share Fisker’s vision of driving mass electrification forward by producing more desirable EVs for the global market here in the United States, and I look forward to building a disruptive strategy that combines Fisker’s unique business model with the very best manufacturing processes that assure unparalleled results and outstanding, reliable products.” – Don Jackson, Senior Advisor (Manufacturing), Fisker Automotive
We should expect to see the company continue its surge forwards with Jackson’s help and Henrik Fisker’s vision, and frankly we’re rather excited to see what is definitely going to be a proper threat to Tesla’s new small SUV. But it’s worth bearing in mind that by 2021, there’ll be a huge number of similarly-sized electric SUVs from established manufacturers, so Fisker will most certainly have their work cut out for them when their car lands.
