A possible starter in Australia wearing an Opel badge, General Motor’s UK brand Vauxhall has released first details on the Astra GXR – the most powerful, Astra yet.
Based on the platform of the just launched Astra GTC, the rip-snorting newcomer boasts 210kW/400Nm from its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine (rival Volkswagen Golf R – 188kW/330Nm).
Harnessing all of that under-bonnet urge is a specially-developed chassis (re-worked further than the GXR) – including a mechanical limited-slip differential and Brembo brakes.
Externally, the Vauxhall Astra GXR highlights an aerodynamic bodykit, including a roof spoiler, sculptured bumpers and side skirts, while inside are upgraded instruments, a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel and sports seats.
Vauxhall developed the Astra GXR during testing at Germany’s Nurburgring racetrack with race driver Jo Winkelhock at the wheel.
“We have devised a great package that will convince even the most experienced an enthusiastic drivers – and not just on the Nurburgring,” Winkelhock explained.
