Want to know the European brand with the cleanest exhausts? It’s actually Fiat.
According to JATO Dynamics, last year the Italian brand averaged (across the entire model range) exhaust C02 levels of 119.8g/km – well below the European Union’s target for 2015 of 130g/km.
In fact 2012 was the sixth consecutive year Fiat has had the cleanest exhausts in Europe.
Pioneering technologies like 0.9-litre TwinAir Turbo Natural Power engine – a CNG gas-powered engine good for 60kW – Fiat has reduced its average C02 emissions by 13 per-cent over the last six years.
Surprisingly, Fiat has been Europe’s leading producer of natural gas vehicles for 15 years and from 1997 until the end of last year has sold more than 500,000 natural gas cars and commercial vehicles.
Locally, Fiat sells the 500 TwinAir (from $18,800) with average exhaust emissions of 3.5l/100kms and later this year the clever Fiat Panda (a top seller in Italy) goes on-sale offering similarly clean exhaust emissions.
