Ferrari SP3JC Is Not About To Win Beauty Contests

Perhaps the most visually-divisive ‘special’ Ferrari to date.

2018 Ferrari SP3JC – Special Project One-Off

Italian supercar marque Ferrari have pulled the wraps off a unique variation of its F12 TdF, commissioned by a loyal, long-time customer, as a “pure, uncompromising” roadster that with a paint job that can leave you reeling. It’s called the SP3JC and it’s really quite something, isn’t it.

This writer is resigned to saying that because really, it’s a difficult car to love. The Ferrari F12 TdF is an amazingly-beautiful cars, mixing elegance with performance brutality, but the SP3JC is just very odd. You have the reworked fascia, replete with a ‘smiling’ grille that you cannot unsee, and a chin so prominent you could shovel your driveway with it. Moving up the bodywork there are a couple of glass panels in the bonnet to show off the (mechanically unchanged) V12 engine that lives beneath, but it all looks & feels a little too Chevrolet Corvette to be truly desired.

The sides are broadly similar to the F12 TdF (aside from the missing roof, of course), though the rear has seen significant changes in the gestation between F12 to SP3JC. There are dual taillights set into a darkened cutout in the bodywork while in the middle, there are slashes across the bumper to emphasise the width of the new car. Beneath that sits a large rear diffuser section which, honestly, looks like a massive and unfortunate overbite.

If you thought the white/yellow/blue paintwork was painful to look at on the outside, opening the doors will reveal an equally sick-inducing experience, with bright-blue seats and dash trim, offset only by small swathes of white leather breaking up what looks like a wet dream from Little Mermaid. The colour scheme is, allegedly, inspired by pop art, which the owner is a huge fan of. Guess it was meant to be divisive from the get-go.

There are absolutely no mechanical changes to report, so the 6.3-litre V12 up front continues to produce a hefty 574kW and 705Nm, with power going to the rear via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. With this, we urge those of you that are fortunate enough to commission their own Ferraris to please, for the love of all that’s holy, don’t do this sort of thing. Again.
